Autumn leave crafts are fun creative activities for children to do in this season. If you are surrounded by yellow and orange shades then kids will love to make this craft. If not, it’s even better reason to make some autumn leaves with yarn and some basic craft supplies.
As I always mention, doing these creative crafts will not only be fun but also will develop key early childhood skills such as fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination skills, problem solving skills. If you like to learn more, read about play based learning activities.
This is also a great craft project to do in a kindergarten for preschool kids.
One tricky part of this project is to wrap yarn around the leaf. This is something kids might need help with from adults. Overall, children aged 4 and up can do this craft with some guidance and support.

How to Make Autumn Leave Craft With Your Kids
STEP 1
Start by creating a leaf shape stencil. You can draw a leaf on paper and cut it out. After that, let the kids cut out around 10 leaves from cardboard, if they are good with scissors.
Corrugated cardboard (packaging cardboard) is ideal for this as it has multiple layers and it’s easy for us to wrap yarn around it.
STEP 2
Once the autumn leaf shapes are ready, glue each on to a popsicle stick as shown below. It’s easier with hot glue.
STEP 3
Then we are going to wrap yarn around the leaf. We used 8 ply yarn with several autumn colours like coral, pale yellow, mustard and light brown.
Start at the popsicle stick end and keep wrapping around the leaf. The end of the leaf is going to be tricky as it might slip. Try to keep it loose. If you pull it tight, it will slip off easily.
Use hot glue to hold the parts you have already wrapped to keep them secure. Kids might need some help from you to finish this step.
However, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just wrapping around the leaf will be enough. Here is how we finished it.
STEP 4
Place a piece of craft foam inside the toilet paper roll (we used a piece of packaging foam).
You don’t need a perfect cylinder, just a piece that fits inside the tube is enough. This will help you keep the popsicle sticks tightly.
STEP 5
Next, we wrapped the toilet paper roll with a brown yarn around it. This step is simple and we used hot glue to hold the ends in place.
STEP 6
Finally, insert the popsicle sticks into the toilet paper roll. Be gentle while you do this, not to mess up the wrapped yarn.
Once all done, you can glue the toilet paper roll to cardstock paper or any flat surface. Here you have a lovely autumn leave craft.
