DIY Wooden Christmas Ornaments For Kids

Making wooden Christmas ornaments is a fun and creative project for kids to do at home during the holidays.

Using just a few basic supplies like small wooden discs, paint, markers and ribbons, children can make their own unique decorations for the Christmas tree.

It’s a great way to spend time together as a family and add a homemade touch to your holiday decorations.

Let’s get started and see how we can make three different DIY Christmas ornaments for kids. The possibilities are endless though.

Craft Supplies

These are the supplies you need to make these Christmas ornaments. However, you don’t need all of them to make just one ornament.

Supplies for making Christmas ornaments
  • Wooden rounds
  • Acrylic paint and brush
  • Pom pom / Felt / Pipe cleaners / Googly eyes / Ribbon and other basic craft items
  • Marker pen
  • Hanging cords (Jute rope or cotton cord)
  • Craft glue
  • Painters tape (optional)

How To Make A Personalised Christmas Ornaments

PAINT THE WOODEN ROUND

For this ornament, we used 10cm wooden rounds. Start with painting it with white acrylic paint. Draw a line about a third of the way up from the bottom of the circle.

We used painters tape to have a clean line, but this is completely optional.

You may need two coats with white paint to fully cover the area. Make sure the first coat is completely dry before putting on the second coat.

Decorate the ornaMeNt AND PERSONALISE

Once the paint is completely dry, decorate the ornament with ribbon. We used one horizontal line and a bow as shown.

Hang it with a jute or cotton cord.

You can then create the name tags for the kids in the white area, which makes it really personalised.

This can be done with a cutting machine to cut out the names with vinyl and stick them on. Alternatively, you can print or write the names as well.

How To Make A Santa Ornament

PAINT THE SANTA’S BEARD

We started this one with painting with white acrylic paint. To make it easier to paint the curved shape, we used painters tape.

Again, this can be done without tape, just by drawing a line and painting carefully. But this way is easier for kids.

Then paint the rest of the wooden area pink.

ADD THE DETAILS

Once it’s all dry, add googly eyes and use a marker pen to draw the mouth.

Don’t forget to attach the hanging cord before putting on the Santa hat.

For the hat, we used a felt sheet and a white pom pom and glued them on to the wooden round as shown in the picture.

How To Make A Reindeer Ornament

Use the pipe cleaners as antlers

This is a simple Christmas ornament you can do at home with a few basic craft supplies.

We used red pipe cleaners for this. Thread it through the hole and tie a knot. Use your fingers to curl the pipe cleaners to shape them like antlers.
